Atlas Moths
Atlas Moths
The atlas moth is the largest moth in the world. Its wingspan can reach over 10 inches across. Atlas moths live in the tropical forests of Asia. The tips of their wings look like snake heads, which may help scare away predators.
Giant Wings
Atlas moth wings are some of the biggest of any insect. The wings are reddish-brown with beautiful patterns. The tips of the front wings curve and look like snake heads. When the moth feels threatened, it drops to the ground and slowly flaps its wings to mimic a snake.
A Short Life
Adult atlas moths do not have mouths and cannot eat. They survive on fat stored from when they were caterpillars. An adult atlas moth lives only one to two weeks. During that time, their only goal is to find a mate and lay eggs.
