Beetles
Beetles
Beetles are insects found almost everywhere on Earth. They have hard shells that cover their wings. There are more kinds of beetles than any other animal. Scientists have found over 400,000 types. Beetles come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.
Hard Shells
A beetle's hard shell is made of a special covering called an elytra. It protects the soft wings underneath. When a beetle wants to fly, it lifts the shell up. Then it flaps its real wings. The hard shell also keeps the beetle safe from enemies.
Helpful Bugs
Many beetles are helpful to nature. Ladybugs eat bugs that hurt garden plants. Dung beetles roll animal poop away and clean up the earth. Some beetles help dead plants and animals break down. Without beetles, the world would be very messy.
