Belugas
Belugas
Beluga whales are small, white whales that live in Arctic waters. They are sometimes called the canaries of the sea because they make so many sounds. Belugas have round foreheads and seem to smile. They are one of the friendliest looking whales.
Arctic Life
Belugas are perfectly built for cold Arctic waters. Their white color helps them blend in with ice and snow. They have a thick layer of blubber to keep warm. Unlike most whales, belugas can turn their heads and make facial expressions.
Sounds of the Sea
Belugas are some of the noisiest whales in the ocean. They make clicks, whistles, chirps, and squeals. Sailors used to hear them through the hulls of their wooden ships. Belugas use these sounds to communicate with each other and find their way.
Fun Facts
- Belugas can change the shape of their forehead, called a melon, to make different sounds.
- Baby belugas are born gray or brown and turn white as they grow up.
- Belugas can swim backward, which is rare for whales.
