Bison
Bison are the largest land animals in North America. They have big heads, shaggy brown fur, and short curved horns. Long ago, millions of bison roamed the prairies. Today, they live in parks and protected areas where they are safe.
Life on the Plains
Bison live in big groups called herds. They spend most of the day eating grass. Bison can walk many miles to find food and water. In the winter, they use their strong heads to push snow away and find grass underneath.
Strong and Fast
Even though bison are huge, they can run very fast. They can also jump high and swim well. Male bison, called bulls, can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Mother bison, called cows, take good care of their babies, which are called calves.
