Chameleons
Chameleons
Chameleons are amazing lizards found mainly in Africa and Madagascar. They are famous for being able to change the color of their skin. Chameleons can also move each eye independently, so they can look in two different directions at the same time!
Color Changing
Chameleons change color using special cells in their skin. They do not just change color to match their surroundings. They also change color based on their mood, temperature, and to communicate with other chameleons. A happy chameleon might turn bright green.
Super Tongue
A chameleon's tongue is incredibly fast. It can shoot out and catch an insect in about 0.07 seconds! Their tongue can be up to twice the length of their body. Chameleons have special feet that grip branches like tongs, and a curly tail that works like a fifth hand.
Fun Facts
- A chameleon's tongue can be twice as long as its body.
- They can see in almost every direction at once.
- Chameleons change color to show mood, not just for camouflage.
