Cheetahs
Cheetahs
Cheetahs are the speed champions of the animal world. They can run up to 70 miles per hour in short bursts. Cheetahs live mainly in Africa's grasslands. They have spotted coats and black tear marks running from their eyes to their mouth.
Built for Speed
Everything about a cheetah is designed for speed. They have long legs, a flexible spine, and a deep chest for big lungs. Their claws do not fully retract, giving them grip like soccer cleats. Their long tail helps them balance when making sharp turns.
Hunting Style
Cheetahs hunt during the day using their incredible eyesight. They stalk close to prey and then sprint to catch it. A chase usually lasts less than a minute because cheetahs get very hot. After catching prey, they must rest before eating.
Fun Facts
- Cheetahs can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 3 seconds.
- They are the only big cats that cannot roar. They chirp and purr instead.
- Cheetah cubs have a mohawk of fur on their backs.
Did You Know?
Cheetahs are endangered, with only about 7,000 left in the wild. They are the most vulnerable of Africa's big cats because they lose races for food against lions and hyenas.
