Colossal Squid
Colossal Squid
The colossal squid is the heaviest squid in the world. It is even heavier than the giant squid. Colossal squid live in the freezing waters around Antarctica. Very few have ever been seen, making them one of the ocean's greatest mysteries.
Hooks and Claws
Unlike the giant squid, the colossal squid has sharp hooks on its tentacles and arms. These rotating hooks help it grab and hold onto prey. The colossal squid also has the largest eyes of any known animal. Each eye can be over 11 inches wide.
Life in the Deep
Colossal squid live in the deep, cold waters of the Southern Ocean. They are believed to be ambush predators that wait for food to come close. Scientists think they move slowly to save energy in the cold water. Only a handful of colossal squid have ever been caught.
