Crocodiles
Crocodiles are large reptiles that have been on Earth for over 200 million years. They lived alongside the dinosaurs! Crocodiles are found in tropical areas of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia. They have the strongest bite of any animal alive.
Powerful Predators
A crocodile's bite force can be over 3,700 pounds per square inch. They ambush prey by hiding just below the water's surface with only their eyes showing. Crocodiles eat fish, birds, and large mammals. Despite their powerful bite, the muscles to open their mouth are very weak.
Caring Parents
Mother crocodiles are surprisingly good parents. They guard their nests carefully and help baby crocodiles out of their eggs. The mother then carries her babies to the water in her mouth very gently. She protects them for several months after they hatch.
Fun Facts
