Deer

Deer are graceful mammals found in forests, grasslands, and mountains around the world. There are about 43 different species. Male deer grow antlers, which are like branches on their heads. They shed their antlers every year and grow new ones.

Antlers and Adaptations

Only male deer usually grow antlers. Antlers can grow up to an inch per day, making them one of the fastest-growing tissues in the animal kingdom. Deer have excellent hearing and can move each ear independently. They also have a great sense of smell.

Deer Babies

Baby deer are called fawns. Most fawns are born with white spots on their brown fur. These spots help them hide in the forest by looking like dappled sunlight. Fawns can stand up and walk within 20 minutes of being born.
