Eels
Eels
Eels are fish that look like snakes. They have long, thin bodies and smooth, slippery skin. Eels live in oceans, rivers, and lakes around the world. Some eels are small, but others can grow very long. They swim by wiggling their whole body.
Where They Live
Some eels live in salty ocean water, while others live in fresh water. Many eels hide in holes or cracks in rocks during the day. They come out at night to hunt fish and shrimp. Moray eels are often found on coral reefs. They poke their heads out to surprise their prey.
A Long Journey
Some eels travel thousands of miles in their lives. American and European eels are born in the ocean. Baby eels then swim to rivers and lakes to grow up. When they are older, they swim all the way back to the sea to lay eggs. This long trip is amazing for such a small animal.
Fun Facts
- Electric eels can shock prey with over 600 volts.
