Fireflies
Fireflies
Fireflies are small flying bugs that light up at night. They are not really flies. They are a type of beetle. Their bodies make a soft glow that helps them talk to other fireflies. People also call them lightning bugs.
How They Glow
Fireflies make light inside their bellies. This light is made by mixing special chemicals with air. The light does not give off heat, so it is called cold light. Fireflies flash their lights in patterns. Each kind of firefly has its own flash pattern.
Where They Live
Fireflies live in warm, wet places like fields and forests. They like to be near tall grass, trees, and ponds. Baby fireflies are called larvae and live in the dirt or near water. They eat snails and worms. Adult fireflies eat very little.
