Food Webs

A food web is made up of many food chains that are linked together. Most animals eat more than one type of food. A mouse might eat seeds, fruit, and insects. This means the mouse is part of several food chains at once.

How Food Webs Work

In a forest food web, a squirrel eats nuts and berries. An owl eats the squirrel, but also eats mice. The mice eat seeds and insects. All these connections make a web of feeding relationships.

Why Food Webs Matter

Food webs show how all living things depend on each other. If one species disappears, it can hurt many others. Scientists study food webs to understand how ecosystems work. Healthy food webs mean healthy ecosystems.

Fun Facts

  • A single food web in a pond can include hundreds of different species.
  • Sharks are at the top of the ocean food web.
  • Even tiny plankton play a huge role in the ocean food web.

Did You Know?

When wolves were brought back to Yellowstone National Park, the whole food web changed! Even the rivers changed direction because the elk stopped eating all the trees near the water.
