Giant Squid
Giant Squid
The giant squid is one of the most mysterious creatures in the ocean. It lives deep underwater where it is very dark. Giant squid can grow up to 43 feet long. For centuries, sailors told stories of sea monsters that were probably giant squid.
Deep Sea Mystery
Giant squid live so deep in the ocean that scientists have rarely seen them alive. The first photos of a living giant squid were taken in 2004. They have the largest eyes of any animal, each about the size of a dinner plate. These huge eyes help them see in the dark deep ocean.
Tentacles and Arms
Giant squid have eight arms and two extra-long tentacles. The tentacles can stretch out to grab prey from far away. Each arm and tentacle is covered with suckers that have sharp, tooth-like rings. Giant squid eat fish and other squid in the deep ocean.
