Giraffes
Giraffes
Giraffes are the tallest animals in the world. They can grow up to 18 feet tall! That is as tall as a two-story building. Giraffes live in the savannas of Africa. Their long necks help them eat leaves from the tops of tall trees.
Long Neck, Big Heart
A giraffe's neck can be over 6 feet long, but it has only seven bones, the same number as a human neck. Their hearts are very powerful, weighing about 25 pounds, to pump blood all the way up to their heads. Giraffes have long, dark purple tongues that can reach 20 inches.
Unique Patterns
Every giraffe has a unique pattern of spots, just like human fingerprints. No two giraffes look exactly the same. Baby giraffes, called calves, can stand and walk within an hour of being born. They are about 6 feet tall at birth!
