Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs are small mammals covered in sharp spines. When they feel scared, they curl up into a tight ball with their spines sticking out in every direction. Hedgehogs are found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. They are active at night and eat insects.

Spiny Armor

A hedgehog has about 5,000 to 7,000 spines on its back. The spines are actually modified hairs made of keratin. Baby hedgehogs are born with soft spines that harden within a few days. Hedgehogs can run surprisingly fast, up to 6 miles per hour.

Night Hunters

Hedgehogs come out at night to hunt for insects, worms, snails, and slugs. They have a great sense of smell and hearing. Hedgehogs are helpful to gardeners because they eat pests. In winter, hedgehogs hibernate in nests of leaves.

When hedgehogs find a new smell, they sometimes create a frothy foam in their mouth and spread it over their spines. Scientists are not sure why they do this, but it is called self-anointing!
