Herons

Herons are tall, slim birds with long legs. They wade through shallow water looking for food. Herons have long, pointy beaks that work like spears. They stand very still and wait for fish to swim by. Then they strike fast to grab their meal.

How They Hunt

Herons are patient hunters. They can stand still for a long time without moving. When a fish comes close, the heron shoots its neck out quickly. They also eat frogs, snakes, and small mammals. Their long legs keep their bodies dry while wading.

Heron Homes

Herons live near ponds, rivers, and marshes. They build big nests in trees, often close to other herons. A group of heron nests is called a heronry. Many herons fly with their necks folded back in an S-shape.
