Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world. They get their name from the humming sound their wings make. These tiny birds can hover in place, fly backward, and even fly upside down! They are found only in the Americas.

Incredible Wings

A hummingbird's wings beat up to 80 times per second. That is so fast you cannot see them move! This rapid wing movement lets them hover in front of flowers while drinking nectar with their long, thin tongues. Their hearts beat over 1,000 times per minute during flight.

Tiny but Tough

Despite being tiny, hummingbirds are tough. Some species migrate over 2,000 miles each year. The bee hummingbird is the smallest bird in the world at just 2 inches long. Hummingbirds eat half their body weight in nectar and insects every day.
