Lotus Flowers
Lotus Flowers
Lotus flowers are lovely plants that live in ponds, lakes, and slow rivers. They have big round leaves that float on top of the water. Their pink or white flowers open to the sun in the morning. Lotus flowers are very important in many cultures, especially in Asia.
Clean in the Mud
Lotus plants grow in muddy water, but their flowers and leaves stay clean. This is because the leaves have a special waxy coating. Water and dirt just roll right off the leaves. Scientists call this the lotus effect. People have tried to copy this to make clothes and paint that do not get dirty.
A Special Flower
The lotus flower has meant something important to people for thousands of years. In India and Egypt, it was a sacred flower. The flower opens every morning and closes at night. All the parts of the lotus are useful. People eat the seeds, roots, and leaves in many dishes.
