Meerkat

Meerkats are small mammals that live in the deserts of southern Africa. They are famous for standing upright on their hind legs to watch for predators. Meerkats live in large groups called mobs or gangs that can have up to 50 members.

Guard Duty

Meerkats take turns standing guard while others search for food. The lookout stands on its back legs on a high rock or mound, scanning the sky for eagles and the ground for jackals and snakes. If danger is spotted, the guard gives a loud bark and everyone runs to their burrow.

Underground Cities

Meerkats live in underground tunnel systems with many rooms and exits. These burrows can be very large and complex. Meerkats are immune to certain scorpion and snake venoms, which is helpful because they eat scorpions! Baby meerkats are taught how to handle scorpions by adults.
