Minks

Minks are small animals with soft, dark brown fur. They are part of the weasel family, just like otters and ferrets. Minks live near rivers, lakes, and marshes in North America and Europe. They are very good swimmers and spend lots of time in the water.

Water Hunters

Minks are excellent swimmers and divers. They have webbed feet that help them move through the water. Minks hunt fish, frogs, and other small water animals. They can also climb trees to catch birds. On land, they hunt mice, rabbits, and insects.

Fur Coats

A mink's fur is thick and waterproof. This keeps them warm even in cold rivers. The fur has two layers: a soft inner layer and longer outer hairs. Minks are usually dark brown, but some are almost black. They live in dens near water, often in old burrows made by other animals.

Fun Facts

  • Minks can swim up to 100 feet underwater without coming up for air.
  • They are active mostly at night and early morning.
  • A baby mink is called a kit.
