Moths
Moths are flying insects much like butterflies. They have soft bodies and two pairs of wings. Most moths come out at night. They are often drawn to lights in the dark. There are about 160,000 kinds of moths in the world.
Moths vs. Butterflies
Moths and butterflies look alike but have differences. Moths usually fly at night, while butterflies fly in the day. Moths have fuzzy bodies and feathery antennae. Butterflies have thin bodies and thin antennae with tiny balls on the ends. Moths rest with their wings flat.
Important Helpers
Moths help plants by carrying pollen from flower to flower. This helps new plants grow. Many moths are food for bats, birds, and frogs. Some moth caterpillars make silk cocoons. People use silk from silk moth cocoons to make cloth.
Fun Facts
- The atlas moth has wings almost as big as a dinner plate.
