Ocelots
Ocelots
Ocelots are beautiful wild cats with golden fur covered in black spots and stripes. They are about twice the size of a house cat. Ocelots live in warm places like rainforests, grasslands, and swamps. They are excellent climbers and spend a lot of time in trees. These cats hunt at night and rest during the day.
A Coat of Many Spots
Each ocelot has its own special pattern of spots, just like a fingerprint. Their fur helps them blend in with the shadows of the forest. Ocelots have big eyes that help them see in the dark. Their whiskers are long and help them feel their way through thick plants. They also have soft paws that let them walk quietly.
Where They Live
Ocelots live from southern Texas all the way down to Argentina. They like places with lots of trees and bushes to hide in. Each ocelot has its own territory that it marks with scent. Males have bigger territories than females. Ocelots are good swimmers and do not mind getting wet to catch a fish.
What They Eat
Ocelots eat small animals like rabbits, rodents, lizards, and birds. They sometimes catch fish and frogs from streams. These cats hunt by sneaking up on their prey and pouncing. They have sharp teeth and claws to catch their food. A hungry ocelot can travel many miles in one night looking for a meal.
Fun Facts
- Ocelots have a rough tongue that helps them scrape meat off bones.
- Baby ocelots are called kittens and are born with their eyes closed.
- Ocelots can purr like a house cat but also make yowling sounds.
