Osprey

The osprey is a large bird of prey that hunts fish. It is the only hawk in North America that dives into the water to catch fish. Ospreys have a white belly and a brown back. They are found near lakes, rivers, and coastlines on every continent except Antarctica.

Amazing Fishing Skills

Ospreys hover over the water and then plunge in feet-first to grab fish. Their feet have rough, spiny pads and curved talons to grip slippery fish. They can even close their nostrils to keep water out during a dive. Ospreys catch a fish on about 70 percent of their dives.

Nests Near Water

Ospreys build large stick nests near water, often on top of poles, towers, or dead trees. They return to the same nest year after year, adding more sticks each season. Some osprey nests are used for decades and can become very large. Both parents help raise the chicks.
