Ostriches

Ostriches are the largest and heaviest birds alive today. They can grow up to 9 feet tall and weigh over 300 pounds. Ostriches cannot fly, but they are the fastest birds on land. They live in the grasslands and deserts of Africa.

Built to Run

Ostriches can run up to 45 miles per hour, making them the fastest two-legged animal. Their long, strong legs can cover 16 feet in a single stride. Each foot has only two toes, which helps them run faster. An ostrich kick is powerful enough to harm a lion.

Big Birds, Big Eggs

Ostrich eggs are the largest eggs of any living bird. A single egg weighs about 3 pounds and is as big as 24 chicken eggs! Despite having the largest eyes of any land animal, ostriches have a brain smaller than their eyeballs.
