Peregrine Falcons
Peregrine Falcons
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on Earth. When diving for prey, it can reach speeds over 240 miles per hour. Peregrine falcons are found on every continent except Antarctica. They hunt other birds by diving down on them from high above.
Speed Record
During a hunting dive called a stoop, the peregrine tucks in its wings and drops like a missile. It hits its prey with a balled-up fist of talons at incredible speed. Special bony structures in their nostrils let them breathe at high speeds. Their sharp eyesight can spot prey from over a mile away.
City Falcons
Peregrine falcons have adapted to city life. They nest on tall buildings and bridges, which are like artificial cliffs. Cities have lots of pigeons for them to hunt. Peregrines were once endangered because of the pesticide DDT, but they have made an amazing comeback.
