Piranhas
Piranhas
Piranhas are fish that live in rivers and lakes in South America. Most of them live in the Amazon River. Piranhas have very sharp teeth and strong jaws. They swim in groups called schools and are known for eating meat.
Sharp Teeth and Strong Bite
A piranha's teeth are shaped like tiny triangles. They fit together like a pair of scissors. Piranhas use their teeth to bite chunks of flesh out of their food. Their bite is one of the strongest of any fish for its size. They eat other fish, insects, and sometimes bigger animals that fall into the water.
Not As Scary As You Think
Many stories make piranhas sound more dangerous than they really are. Most piranhas do not attack people or large animals. Some kinds even eat fruits and seeds that drop into the water. Piranhas swim in schools to protect themselves from bigger predators like caimans and river dolphins. They are actually shy fish most of the time.
