Praying Mantises

Praying mantises are cool insects known for their special front legs. They hold these legs up in front of them, which makes them look like they are praying. But really, they are holding their legs ready to grab other bugs. Praying mantises are excellent hunters.

A praying mantis will sit very still and wait for an insect to come close. Then it strikes out with lightning speed. Its front legs have sharp spikes that hold prey tight. Praying mantises have big eyes that can see very well. They can spot small movements from far away. A mantis is the only insect that can turn its head all the way around. This helps it look in every direction without moving its body. Their green or brown color helps them hide among leaves and branches.
