Quetzals
Quetzals
The quetzal is one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Its feathers shine like emeralds and its chest is bright red. Male quetzals have super long tail feathers that can be over 2 feet long. Quetzals live in cool, misty mountain forests in Central America. The ancient Maya and Aztecs believed this bird was sacred.
A Bird Fit for a King
The resplendent quetzal was very important to the Maya and Aztec people. They thought the bird was connected to a god named Quetzalcoatl. Only kings and priests were allowed to wear quetzal feathers. The birds were never killed. After the feathers were plucked, the birds were set free to grow new ones.
Life in the Cloud Forest
Quetzals live in cloud forests that are always wet with mist and fog. They mostly eat wild avocados. The quetzal swallows the fruit whole and later spits out the big seed. This helps new avocado trees grow. They also eat insects, frogs, and lizards. Quetzals nest in holes in old rotting trees.
Fancy Tail Feathers
Only male quetzals have the long tail feathers. These feathers grow during breeding season to help them find a mate. The tail can be much longer than the bird's body. When males fly, their tails flow behind them like colorful ribbons. Females are also green but do not have the long tail.
