Quokkas
Quokkas
Quokkas are cute, furry animals that live in Australia. They are about the size of a house cat. Quokkas have round faces that look like they are always smiling. Many people love taking pictures with them because they seem so friendly.
Island Homes
Most quokkas live on Rottnest Island near the west coast of Australia. The island's name means 'rat nest' because early explorers thought quokkas were giant rats. Quokkas also live in some small areas on the mainland. They like places with thick plants where they can hide. At night, they come out to eat grass and leaves.
Hopping Marsupials
Quokkas are marsupials, just like kangaroos and wallabies. They hop around on their strong back legs. Mother quokkas carry their babies, called joeys, in a pouch. Quokkas can climb small trees to reach leaves. They do not need to drink much water because they get it from the plants they eat.
