Raccoons

Raccoons are medium-sized mammals known for the black mask markings on their faces. They are native to North America but now live in parts of Europe and Asia too. Raccoons are very clever and have nimble hands that can open jars, doors, and latches.

Clever Hands

Raccoons have incredibly sensitive front paws with five fingers. They can feel objects underwater to find food. Raccoons often dip their food in water before eating it. Scientists think this makes their sense of touch even sharper. They can solve complex problems to get food.

Night Life

Raccoons are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They eat almost anything: fruit, nuts, insects, eggs, and even garbage. Raccoons are excellent climbers and swimmers. They live in forests, but many have adapted to life in cities and suburbs.

Fun Facts

  • Raccoons can rotate their back feet 180 degrees.
  • Their hands have as many nerve endings as human hands.
  • A group of raccoons is called a gaze.

Did You Know?

Raccoons wash their food not because they are clean, but because water makes their sensitive paws work even better at feeling what they are eating!
