Reindeer

Reindeer are deer that live in cold places near the North Pole. In North America, they are also called caribou. They have thick fur that keeps them warm in the snow. Reindeer are the only deer where both males and females grow antlers.

Built for Cold

Reindeer have special hooves that spread out on snow so they do not sink. Their hooves also help them dig for food under the snow. Their thick fur has two layers that keep them warm. Even their noses are made to warm up cold air before it goes into their lungs.

Long Journeys

Reindeer travel in huge herds. Some herds travel thousands of miles each year to find food. This long trip is called migration. It is one of the longest journeys of any land animal. They eat grass, leaves, and moss called lichen.
