Savanna Biome

Savannas are wide, flat grasslands with a few scattered trees. They are found in warm areas of Africa, South America, and Australia. Savannas have a wet season and a dry season. The African savanna is famous for its incredible wildlife.

Life on the Savanna

Savannas are home to many large animals. In Africa, you can find elephants, lions, zebras, and giraffes. Huge herds of wildebeests and gazelles roam the grasslands. Predators like cheetahs and hyenas hunt the herds.

Surviving the Seasons

During the wet season, the grass grows tall and green. Animals have plenty of food and water. In the dry season, the grass turns brown and water becomes scarce. Many animals migrate to find water. Fires during the dry season actually help the savanna stay healthy.

Fun Facts

  • The African savanna is home to the largest land animal migration in the world.
  • Savanna fires can actually help new grass grow by clearing out dead plants.
  • Baobab trees on the savanna can store up to 32,000 gallons of water in their trunks.
