Seaweed and Kelp
Seaweed and Kelp
Seaweed and kelp are plant-like organisms that grow in the ocean. Kelp can grow into huge underwater forests. These underwater forests are home to many sea creatures. Seaweed is also an important food for people in many countries.
Kelp Forests
Giant kelp can grow up to 175 feet tall, making it one of the fastest growing organisms on Earth. Kelp forests provide shelter for sea otters, fish, and many other animals. The kelp attaches to rocks on the ocean floor with a root-like structure called a holdfast.
Seaweed and People
People eat seaweed in many forms. Nori is used to wrap sushi. Kelp is used in ice cream and toothpaste to make them smooth. Seaweed is very healthy and full of vitamins and minerals. Scientists are also studying seaweed as a source of clean energy.
Fun Facts

- Kelp forests produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide, helping fight climate change.
Did You Know?
Seaweed is not actually a plant! It is a type of algae. Unlike plants, seaweed does not have roots, stems, or leaves, even though it looks like it does.
