Swordfish
Swordfish
Swordfish are large fish that live in warm ocean waters. They have a long, flat bill that looks like a sword. Swordfish are very fast swimmers. They can grow up to 14 feet long. These fish are powerful hunters that chase down smaller fish.
Speedy Swimmers
Swordfish are some of the fastest fish in the ocean. They can swim up to 60 miles per hour. Their smooth, pointed bodies help them slice through water. They use their strong tails to push themselves forward. Swordfish can dive very deep in the sea to find food.
Using the Sword
The long bill of a swordfish is not used to stab prey. Instead, the swordfish swings its bill back and forth. This stuns or hurts small fish, making them easy to catch. The bill also helps them cut through the water more easily. Young swordfish grow their bill as they get older.
Fun Facts
- Swordfish have no teeth as adults.
- They can warm up their eyes to see better in cold water.
