Termites
Termites
Termites are small bugs that look a bit like ants. They live together in huge groups called colonies. Termites eat wood and dead plants. They help break down old trees in the forest. Some termites build tall mounds made of dirt.
Life in a Colony
A termite colony has a queen, a king, workers, and soldiers. The queen lays all the eggs. Workers find food and build tunnels. Soldiers protect the nest from enemies like ants. Each termite has its own job to do.
Amazing Mounds
Some termites build huge mounds out of mud and spit. These mounds can be taller than a grown-up. Inside, there are tunnels that let fresh air flow through. The mound keeps the termites cool in hot weather. It also keeps them safe from rain.
Fun Facts
- A termite queen can live for over 25 years.
- Termites cannot see because they are blind.
- Some termite mounds are over 30 feet tall.
Did You Know?
Termites have tiny helpers in their tummies that help them digest wood. Without these helpers, they could not eat trees.
