Toucans
Toucans
Toucans are tropical birds with the most amazing beaks in the bird world. Their beaks can be almost half the length of their bodies! Despite their size, toucan beaks are very light because they are hollow inside. Toucans live in the rainforests of Central and South America.
That Amazing Beak
A toucan's big, colorful beak has several uses. It helps them reach fruit on thin branches that cannot hold their weight. The beak also helps them regulate body temperature by releasing heat. Toucans toss fruit into the air and catch it in their beaks to eat.
Rainforest Life
Toucans live in the canopy layer of the rainforest. They nest in holes in trees, often in old woodpecker holes. Toucans are social birds that live in small flocks. At night, they tuck their beak over their back and fold their tail over their head to sleep.
Fun Facts
- A toucan's beak can be up to one-third of its body length.
