Augustus Caesar

Augustus Caesar was the first emperor of the Roman Empire. He was born in Rome in 63 BC. He transformed Rome from a republic into an empire. His rule brought a long period of peace known as the Pax Romana.

Rise to Power

Augustus was born Gaius Octavius and was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar. When Julius Caesar was assassinated, he named Octavius as his heir. Octavius defeated his rivals in a civil war. In 27 BC, the Roman Senate gave him the title Augustus, meaning 'the respected one.'

The Pax Romana

Augustus ruled for over 40 years and brought peace to the empire. He built roads, aqueducts, and beautiful buildings. He famously said he found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble. The month of August is named after him.
