Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi is a political leader from Myanmar. She was born in Rangoon, Myanmar, in 1945. She spent years under house arrest for standing up for democracy in her country. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her nonviolent struggle.

Early Life

Suu Kyi's father was a hero of Myanmar's independence. He was assassinated when she was just two years old. She studied in India and England. She returned to Myanmar in 1988 and joined the movement for democracy.

Fight for Democracy

The military government put her under house arrest for about 15 years. During that time, she could not leave her home or see her family abroad. She won the Nobel Peace Prize while still under house arrest. She was finally released in 2010 and later became a leader in the government.
