Bach

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician. He was born in Eisenach, Germany, in 1685. He wrote music for the church, for orchestras, and for keyboard instruments. Many people consider him one of the greatest composers ever.

Early Life

Bach was born into a large family of musicians. Both his parents died by the time he was 10. He was raised by his older brother who taught him music. He learned to play the organ, violin, and harpsichord.

Big Achievements

Bach wrote over 1,000 pieces of music. He was the music director at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig for 27 years. His music includes The Well-Tempered Clavier and the Brandenburg Concertos. After his death, his music was forgotten for about 80 years before being rediscovered.

  • He was briefly put in jail for trying to quit his job.

Did You Know?

Bach's music was nearly lost to history. In 1829, composer Felix Mendelssohn performed one of Bach's pieces and brought his music back to life. Today, Bach is considered one of the greatest composers of all time.
