Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest composers in history. He was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. He wrote nine symphonies, piano sonatas, and much more. He continued composing music even after he became completely deaf.
Early Life
Beethoven's father was a musician who pushed him to practice very hard. Ludwig gave his first public performance at age seven. He moved to Vienna, Austria, to study music. He quickly became known as a brilliant pianist.
Big Achievements
Beethoven wrote some of the most famous music in the world, including his Fifth Symphony with its famous four-note opening. He began losing his hearing in his late 20s. Even when completely deaf, he composed his Ninth Symphony, which includes the Ode to Joy.

- Beethoven used to pour cold water over his head to help him think.
- He was so messy that his apartment was always in chaos.
- His famous da-da-da-DUM opening is one of the most recognized tunes in music.
Did You Know?
When Beethoven conducted the first performance of his Ninth Symphony, he could not hear the audience clapping. A musician had to turn him around so he could see the crowd cheering.
