Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu was a South African Anglican bishop. He was born in Klerksdorp, South Africa, in 1931. He fought against apartheid using nonviolent methods. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Early Life

Tutu grew up during apartheid, when Black South Africans were treated unfairly. He became a teacher and then a priest. He rose to become the Archbishop of Cape Town. He used his position to speak out against injustice.

Big Achievements

Tutu led peaceful protests against apartheid. He called for the world to put pressure on South Africa to change. After apartheid ended, he led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which helped South Africa heal. He continued to fight for justice around the world until his death in 2021.
