Franz Schubert was born in Austria in 1797. He was one of the greatest composers of all time. He wrote over 600 songs, plus symphonies and piano music. He lived only 31 years, but he left behind amazing music.
A Young Musician
Franz grew up in a family that loved music. His father and brothers taught him to play the violin and piano. He had a beautiful singing voice as a boy. He joined a choir school and began writing his own music when he was very young.
His Music
Schubert wrote a type of song called a lied, which is German for song. These songs tell stories with piano and voice. One famous song is called Ave Maria. He also wrote the Unfinished Symphony, which only has two finished parts. People still love his music today.
