Gladys West

Gladys West is an American mathematician. She was born in Sutherland, Virginia, in 1930. Her mathematical calculations helped create the Global Positioning System, or GPS. Every time someone uses a phone or car to find directions, they are using technology based on her work.

Early Life

West grew up on a farm in Virginia. She worked hard in school because she did not want to work in the fields or factory. She earned a math degree from Virginia State University. She was hired at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, where she was the second Black woman ever employed.

Creating GPS

West programmed computers to calculate the exact shape of the Earth. Her precise calculations were essential for satellite-based navigation. This work became the foundation for the GPS system. She was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame in 2018.
