Haile Selassie

Haile Selassie was the Emperor of Ethiopia. He was born in 1892 in the city of Ejersa Goro. He ruled Ethiopia for over 40 years. He was an important leader in the fight for African independence and helped create the African Union.

Rise to Power

Selassie became regent of Ethiopia in 1916 and then emperor in 1930. He worked to modernize Ethiopia by building schools and hospitals. When Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935, he went into exile. He returned in 1941 when the Italians were defeated.

Legacy

Selassie helped found the Organization of African Unity in 1963, which later became the African Union. He pushed for African nations to work together. He is a central figure in the Rastafari movement. He ruled until 1974, when he was overthrown.
