James Watt was a Scottish inventor and engineer. He was born in Greenock, Scotland, in 1736. He greatly improved the steam engine. His work helped start the Industrial Revolution, which changed how people live and work.

Watt was a curious child who liked to take things apart. He was often sick and was mostly taught at home. He learned to make instruments and tools. He got a job repairing scientific instruments at the University of Glasgow.
