Jose Marti

Jose Marti was a Cuban poet, writer, and national hero. He was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1853. He dedicated his life to winning Cuba's independence from Spain. He is also considered one of the greatest writers in Latin American history.

Early Life

Marti began writing about freedom when he was just a teenager. He was arrested and sent to prison for his political views at age 16. He was then exiled from Cuba. He lived in many countries, including Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States.

Fight for Freedom

While living in New York City, Marti organized the Cuban independence movement. He wrote essays, poems, and speeches calling for Cuba's freedom. He returned to Cuba to fight in the war of independence. He was killed in battle in 1895, but Cuba gained its independence three years later.
