Louis Armstrong was an American jazz musician and singer. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1901. He was one of the most important figures in jazz history. His trumpet playing and gravelly singing voice were loved by millions.
Early Life
Armstrong grew up very poor in New Orleans. He learned to play the cornet at a boys' home where he was sent as a child. He played music on the streets and in jazz clubs. He moved to Chicago to join a famous jazz band.
Big Achievements
Armstrong became the most famous jazz musician in the world. He popularized scat singing and jazz improvisation. His song What a Wonderful World is still beloved today. He toured the world and was nicknamed Satchmo and Pops.
