Marco Polo

Marco Polo was one of the most famous explorers in history. He was born in Venice, Italy, around 1254. He traveled to China and lived there for many years. His book about his travels amazed people across Europe.

Early Life

Polo grew up in Venice, a great trading city. His father and uncle were merchants who traveled to Asia. When Marco was 17, he joined them on a trip to China. The journey took about four years.

Big Achievements

Polo met the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan, who liked him. He worked for the emperor for about 17 years. He traveled all over China and Southeast Asia. After returning to Venice, he wrote a book called The Travels of Marco Polo.

Did You Know?

Many people did not believe Polo's stories because they seemed too amazing. On his deathbed, friends asked him to admit he made things up. He reportedly said, 'I have not told half of what I saw.'
