Marie Van Brittan Brown

Marie Van Brittan Brown was an American inventor. She was born in Queens, New York, in 1922. She invented the first home security system with closed-circuit television. Her invention is the basis for modern home security systems used today.

The Problem

Brown worked as a nurse and often came home late at night. She felt unsafe because police took a long time to respond in her neighborhood. She and her husband Albert decided to invent something to help. They wanted a way to see and talk to whoever was at the door without opening it.

The Invention

In 1966, Brown filed a patent for a home security system. It included a camera that showed images on a TV monitor inside the home. It also had a two-way microphone and a button to unlock the door or alert police. Her patent was granted in 1969 and inspired the security systems we use today.
