Nadia Murad is an Iraqi Yazidi human rights activist. She was born in Kocho, Iraq, in 1993. She survived captivity by ISIS and became an advocate for her people. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for her efforts to end the use of violence as a weapon of war.
Early Life
Murad grew up in a small Yazidi village in northern Iraq. In 2014, ISIS attacked her village and killed many people, including members of her family. She was captured and held against her will. She eventually escaped after three months of captivity.
Activism
After escaping, Murad decided to tell the world what happened to her and her people. She spoke at the United Nations about what she had experienced. She was appointed the first UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 at age 25, sharing it with Denis Mukwege.
